VoIP For Businesses (5 -100 Employees)

Reasons A Smaller Business Shouldn't Use VoIP

Highly competitive call costs from as low as 9c untimed for a local or national landline call and 15c per minute for a call to a mobile telephone should be a compelling financial reason for all business users to use VoIP rather than 'traditional' PSTN or ISDN telephone services for their outbound calls.

However, despite a rapidly escalating use of VoIP by residential users in all parts of Australia there is not the corresponding take up of this easy to use and very high quality service among smaller business users (though the rate of take up of VoIP by large businesses is even faster than for residential users).

The reasons why smaller business users aren't making the very significant savings from VoIP as the two other sectors of the Australian market seem to come down to four:

  1. Fear of loss of quality of VoIP versus PSTN/ISDN
  2. Fear it's a complex process to set up in a business without an 'IT' department
  3. Fear of what happens if the necessary ADSL/SHDSL connection is 'lost'
  4. Belief that VoIP will need a change in numbers or handsets/PBX/Key Station

Exetel has a simple, one step at a time method for a smaller business to implement a VoIP solution with no disruption, down time or even the need to have an "IT Manager".

Reasons A Smaller Business Should Use VoIP

Each of these 'fears' are understandable and even as recently as 18 - 24 months ago they would have been quite correct but not today:

  1. The quality of VoIP calls is virtually indistinguishable from calls made via PSTN or ISDN services on any major VoIP provider's services of which there are dozens from which to choose.
  2. Setting up VoIP for a small business can easily be done either by a sensibly competent person within the business who can read a simple manual and take appropriate care in following the instructions or, if that isn't available, contracting a local telephone installer/computer supplier to do it.
  3. To ensure that any disruption to the business's ADSL/SHDSL service doesn't affect any persons ability to make outbound calls all current VoIP switches for small businesses have automatic fail over back to the standard PSTN or ISDN lines. All inbound calls continue to be switched through the current telephone lines and numbers.
  4. The only sensible VoIP set up for a smaller business utilize an inexpensive VoIP switch that plugs in to the current PABX/Key Station and all calls are made using the existing telephone cabling and hand sets. All inbound calls use the current lines, telephone numbers and the current PABX/Key Station functions remain exactly as they are before the VoIP switch was added.

All of the more sophisticated features of PABX/Key Stations in terms of switching inbound calls to multiple or sequential outbound destinations (an individual employee's mobile or home number as an example) are provided by the VoIP switch and are much lower cost than such facilities on 'traditional' services.

VoIP can provide, at a fraction of the cost, a range of additional services that used to be only available on 'traditional' telephone systems that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. There are a huge range of options for the more adventurous small business that are provided by linking the business's computer systems into the VoIP system to send automated advices to the business' customers and potential customers. These additional facilities can be provided by Exetel who have implemented a huge range of add on VoIP services within our own operations.

The costs of setting up a VoIP switch connected to most Key Stations or small PABXs delivered over the past 5 or so years should be less than $1,000 including installation and testing. The provision and installation and ongoing support can be provided by either Exetel or by a local telephone installer/computer provider.

Any small business that doesn't take advantage of what a good VoIP solution can provide is placing itself at a disadvantage to its competitors similar to a small business of ten years ago that didn't use mobile phones.

Exetel has saved a huge amount of money by implementing VoIP and details of what we did can be found here.
