Neutralising Exetel’s Carbon Emission Impact
Why Is A Commercial Technology Supplier Doing This?
Exetel, like every other commercial entity, residential household and individual car driver, public transport user and every other aspect of human existence contributes to producing carbon emissions that need to be dealt with by the planet’s flora (mainly forests) to prevent the planet’s temperature shields from being adversely affected.
As we, the human species, continue to cut down the planet’s forests and as we continue to use more ‘devices’ that generate carbon emissions the planet’s abilities to ‘neutralise’ the effects of these growing carbon emissions progressively lessens.
According to the UN and the various meetings between representatives of almost all the countries on the planet if nothing is done about both reducing the output of carbon and the creation of increased abilities to deal with what carbon is produced is not immediately addressed then there is a very real danger that this planet will become uninhabitable by homo sapiens and the overwhelming majority of all other living things currently existing.
We, as a group of managers of a commercial entity, don’t have the ability to know whether these claims are true in their entirety, partially true or not true at all; as a dwindling number of equally emphatic people still claim.
What we do know is that the overall claims about the growth in carbon emissions and the suggestions of how to ameliorate the effects of those emissions doesn’t seem to have any possible downside so, on balance, although there is an increased cost to the operation of our company we believe we have an obligation to follow the recommendations of the majority of responsible government representatives of our planet.
Exetel's Contributions
From 1st February 2008 Exetel has elected to use the more expensive ‘green power’ option from its electricity supplier and its directors will also do that as well as recommending to each of its employees that they should also select this option if it’s available to them.
From 1st February 2008 we have also been begin making monthly donations to a Federal Government approved organisation:
http://www.carbonneutral.com.au/
to ‘neutralise’ the impact of what we have calculated to be the number of tonnes of carbon the operation of Exetel has been responsible for emitting in the period 1/2/04 to 31/1/08 and then the amount of carbon our ongoing operations will emit each month from 1/2/08.
Your Additional Contributions – Should You Wish To Make Them
Hopefully, Exetel is providing you with ADSL services at a lower cost than you could obtain them from another commercial entity in your location. In the event that by buying services from Exetel you have allowed yourself to achieve some small saving perhaps you would like to consider making a small part of that saving available to the projects that Exetel's directors have chosen to support.
Exetel has made a function available for you in the Exetel User Facilities to allow Exetel to collect a small amount of money (an amount of your choice) each month to cover the carbon emissions your PC and modem generated for the Exetel broadband service. Should you choose to make a contribution then you do so for any amount of money and you can change that amount or stop contributing it at any time.
