Exetel provides the ability for any user to send SMS messages using their DSL (Exetel DSL as well as non-Exetel DSL) service instead of a mobile telephone. To send an SMS message all you need to do is to go to your Exetel Members Facilities and select the "SMS" button found on the left sidebar menu. If you do not have an Exetel DSL service you can apply for a prepaid or post-paid SMS only account from the left hand side menu.
The SMS service is sourced from aggregators using the major Australian mobile carrier networks and can be used to send SMS’ to any 9 digit mobile number in the world (depending on international mobile network availability).
For locations in Australia from which SMS via DSL can be sent please click here.
Exetel provides a Platinum network to send single SMS messages, with no minimum commitment per month, at a cost of 10 cents per message to any Australian or international mobile network.
Exetel also provides a Gold network to send single SMS messages, with no minimum commitment per month, at a cost of 7 cents per message to any Australian destination and 8.8 cents to any international destination.
For volume commitments pricing can be as low as 5 cents per SMS sent to Australian networks; please discuss your requirements with an Exetel corporate communications consultant by emailing:
There is also a provision to bulk send the same message to multiple mobile numbers at the contracted rate per message.
For many years Exetel used internationally based carriers and their agents to route SMS traffic to and from Australian mobile numbers. We, and many other low cost providers, did this to enable pricing at a fraction of what Australian carriers wanted to charge for SMS.
Over the past 2+ years at least one Australian mobile carrier has fought very hard to prevent this loss of revenue (understandably) and it is now very difficult for Exetel to provide a highly reliable SMS using international points of interconnect.
We therefore have created two SMS pricing levels using two different routes for Australian destinations:
Platinum – a Tier One direct to Australian Network route where SMS never leave Australia – resulting in faster delivery and 100% reliability.
Gold – where most SMS will not leave Australia but, on occasions, some will – delivery can be slower and some re-sends are needed.
Exetel can provide a user with a "Virtual Mobile Number". A VMN is a mobile number that exists but not attached to a SIM/handset. This allows replies to messages sent from the Exetel SMS via DSL facility to be received and subsequently processed if required.
The cost of a "Virtual Mobile Number" per number is $20.00 per month.
SMS messages are displayed on the user's monthly DSL invoice and paid for by direct debit to the user's nominated credit card or bank account.
