Exetel In Sri Lanka

Why Did Exetel Decide To Operate In Sri Lanka?

We looked at The Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India as well as Sri Lanka before selecting Sri Lanka as the best option for establishing a support company. Our reasons were quite varied but the basic and key deciders were:

Exetel Pty Ltd began the program of establishing an operation in Sri Lanka when it employed its first support engineer in Colombo in February 2006 and subsequently employed 3 more engineers all of whom received their initial training in Australia. The Exetel employees based in Sri Lanka up to June 2008 operated from their homes with Exetel supplied computers, telephones and ADSL lines linked directly to Exetel´s North Sydney PABX and data base servers providing end user support and service issue resolution.

What Are Exetel´s Current Plans For Sri Lanka?

Following the successful two years of using Sri Lankan based engineers working from their homes we began the formal process of registering a Sri Lankan company to operate from Colombo’s CBD that would provide full office facilities to allow us to recruit enough personnel to fully replace all support, programming and network monitoring that was then currently done from Exetel’s offices in North Sydney.

We began this process in January 2008 and over the following 5 months we went through the quite complex processes required by the Sri Lankan Board Of Investment to register the company, lease appropriate office space, fit it out together with the various communications services and hire an additional 8 engineers.

We formally opened the offices in July and by June 2009 we were providing all residential support, sales and some programming services from Colombo under the direction of a locally hired Sri Lankan General Manager. We will continue managing Exetel in Sri Lanka in this way for the bulk of 2009 while we train the appropriate people to manage all aspects of the operation using a constant exchange of Australian personnel to transfer the knowledge required to make this a reality.

Australian customers will benefit in the following ways:

  1. Telephone support hours has been increased on week days and telephone support is now provided on week ends and public holidays.
  2. Our three years of experience show that it´s possible to provide a degree qualified level of competence in technical telephone support more easily than in Australia.
  3. Highly qualified customer support personnel are prepared to work in that position for longer than similarly qualified engineers in Australia providing more knowledgeable response.
  4. The speed at which we can bring in to service better end user help facilities will be greatly increased by being able to put in place significantly more programming personnel.
  5. Although Exetel will pay around three times the ‘local’ remuneration in Colombo, the much lower cost of overall operation will contribute to Australian customers continuing to obtain their Exetel services at prices lower than are available from any other Australian provider.

How Does An ‘Exetel’ In Colombo Benefit Sri Lanka?

‘Exetel’ will benefit Sri Lanka by:

  1. Allowing another 30 Sri Lankan university graduates another possibility of pursuing an engineering or programming career in their own country rather than continuing the intellectual ‘impoverishment’ of Sri Lanka by being tempted to emigrate to pursue their careers.
  2. Providing, relatively small but nevertheless helpful, amounts of foreign currency that Exetel Pty Ltd will transfer to Sri Lanka in payment for the services of the Sri Lankan company will benefit the local economy disproportionately to the ‘loss’ of that money by the Australian economy.
  3. By transferring both knowledge and our software free of charge to Sri Lankan companies to help those companies that see a benefit in it become more efficient.
